So many of us use a google toolbar these days. However, if you happen over to the Google search engine home page today, you will find that Google has, literally, gone dark...
No, not as in the site has gone down. Just click over (or look at my screen shot) and you'll see that the background of Google is black today. Why? Well according to Google:
"Google users in the United States will notice today that we "turned the lights out" on the Google.com homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display. However, you can do something to reduce the energy consumption of your home PC by joining the Climate Savers Computing Initiative."
The initiative that Google speaks of here is a smart one. In all industries we are seeing this striving for greener business pastures. Hospitality (as our own Jason Warnock speaks of in his
monthly Hotel Business articles, as well in his
latest article featured in Contract magazine), architecture and design (as we mention in our new
White Paper on the branding footprint of museums and institutions), financial services, and economic development.
Why wouldn't the technology/interactive industry follow suit? If you are reading this post today, you can help with the Earth Hour: simply turn off your lights between 8 and 9PM tonight. You will be joining fellow conservationist comrades across the world in cities including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv.
You can also see other ways to provide help individually by visiting the individual section of
Climate Savers' website.
