Conde Nast Looks at the Best & Worst Green Companies

Posted by Duke on February 26 at 10:24 AM In the March issue of Portfolio, Conde Nast reports on the 11 best Green Companies and the 10 worst that should be doing more.  The list is as follows:

The Green 11

- Bank of America
- Ceres
- Dupont
- General Electric
- Innovest
- Organic Valley
- Starbucks
- Tesla Motors
- Whole Foods
- Wal-Mart
- City of Austin

"Toxic Ten"

- J.R. Simplot Co. (French Fries supplier to McDonald’s)
- Cargill
- Ford Motors
- Boeing
- Apple Computers
- Southern Co.
- American Electric Power
- Massey Energy
- Chevron
- Alcoa

Regarding the 10 worst, I was surprised to see Apple as they seem to do more press on their green initiatives than the 11 best and have had an active green strategy since 1990.  In the Macworld 2008 Keynote Jobs launched the Apple Air with a section dedicated to environmental innovations of the Air.

What is surprising is that Portfolio cites Apple’s iPhone contains both polyvinyl chlorides and brominated flame retardants, both types of chemical which many major cell-phone makers have eliminated from their handsets.  Apple is one of the most innovative thinkers on the planet and there is no reason they should be the environmental leader within the technology manufacturing space on all fronts.

The good news is that they have launched an aggressive campaign called "Greener Apple"  for 2008 that will hopefully put them on the Green Eleven by the end of the year.
